Guide to Choosing the Right Scroll Saw for Your Needs
Many people are confused as to what type of scroll saw to buy for their scrolling projects. If you are buying your first scroll saw or if you are upgrading to a better one, there are many things that you need to consider. These considerations will help you make an informed purchasing decision.
If you are doing a scrolling project, make sure that you don’t’ use pinned blades. The ideal blades to use for your scroll saw are the standard 5″ pinnless blades. Pinned blades have advantages but they cant cut small inside details cuts since you have to drill a very big hole to get the blade’s pin through.
You should also consider if changing blades is easy or not. This consideration is important if your scroll saw project has many holes. In this type of project, the blade needs to be removed, threaded to the wood, then remounted again, many times. This should be done easily and comfortably with your scroll saw. The best saw to use in this case is a saw with an arm that can be raised and can be held in position. This is easier that tool less blade holders.
There are different speeds offered by many saws and you should not have a problem finding this feature in any price range. In many projects, slowing down blade speed is important in order not to burn the edges of the wood when cutting. Changing speeds in some scroll saws needs a change of belts too. An electronic speed control is the best feature for a scroll saw.
You want vibrations to be at a minimum when you are cutting. By design, some saws vibrate more. The more expensive the saw that you buy, the lesser vibrations it makes. Vibration can be remedied by placing the saw on a stand. Vibration will be reduced if you buy a heavy saw and mount is sturdily on a stand. There are stores that sell stands for scroll saws.
If you will cut very large projects, you need to consider the depth of the throat. If you saw has a small throat, then the piece you can swing around on the table while you cut will also be limited. Spiral blades are ideal if you don’t want to rotate the work at all.
Table size should also be considered since it is very difficult to work on a project when most of your wood is hanging off the side of the scroll saw table.
All of us are limited as to how much we are willing or able to spend on a scroll saw. There are benefit to buying a used scroll saw where you get more for your money than buying a new but cheap saw.
